How Audiobooks Can Get You In Trouble. . .

I love when I find a perfect audiobook and skilled narrator. Getting wrapped up in a great story when out running errands or on a road trip can be a great alternative to listening to the radio or trying to find stations in between regions.

Until you have an awkward moment at a drive-thru window. . .

There I was, engrossed in this delightful adventure of a book. It had teased at some romance, and even had some blush worthy moments. But I had been so caught up in the story, I didn’t think twice about the possibility of anything more than heavy petting.

I listened while I was in line to pick up my prescriptions on a nice sunny day, the sunroof cracked for airflow… when things between the main characters got intimate and extremely heated.

I’m not a shy person. It takes a lot to make me blush. But I actually became flustered as it was suddenly my turn at the window, and with the unexpected, no longer G rated words coming from my narrators mouth and car speakers, and the window needed to be down, but the volume was still up, and the pause button.

Where was the pause button?

I wish I could say this was the first time this happened. But it wasn’t. A few years ago, on another warm sunny day, I had the windows down, listening to an audiobook, and didn’t fully realize what was happening as it was the opening scene of a book (thank you, Jay Kristoff). The intensity of the scene became quite vivid just as I stopped in front of a full bus stop. Staring straight ahead, with no expression on my face, I pushed the power window buttons on all my windows at the same time and swallowed hard as I waited for the light to go green.

This is my word to the wise. Be careful what you listen to when you run those errands. One never knows when an unexpected sex scene will catch you off guard—with your windows down—or at a drive-thru window.
